Display settings reset on restart

When I try to change my computer's display settings from 16 colours to 256, I press the apply button and the computer seems to accept it. However, when I restart the computer in order to implement the changes the settings always return to 16 colours. Some programs will not run at all while others obviously don't look right. What should I do?

It sounds as if Windows is using a default display driver instead of one written for your display card. Use the Add New Hardware wizard in Control Panel to install a driver that matches the name of your computer's display card.

If there is no such driver on the Windows CD or on disks that came with your computer, you will have to download a driver from the display card manufacturer's website.
